Powell Gallery Kathy MooreFebruary 03 – March 14, 2025. Explorations of Light by Rob Jemmett

Open to the public (free): Mondays: February 03, 10, 24, March 03, 10 from 5:30pm to 7:00pm
Saturdays: February 08, 15, 22, March 01, 08, from 11:00 am - 3:00 pm.

Rob Jemmett, the co-chair of the TCC’s Pictorial Competition, joined the club in 2021. In less than five years, he has built an extraordinary body of work across various areas of photography, including nature, macro, portraits, creative and still life. Rob has also mastered several photographic techniques, enabling him to achieve the prestigious Life Master title in an unprecedented timeframe.

Rob’s passion for photography began after a back injury prevented him from playing hockey and golf. In 2016, his wife, Sandra, bought him his first camera. After retiring, Rob immersed himself in photography, completing a Certificate in Digital Photography from George Brown College and joining the Toronto Camera Club.
Many of Rob’s photographs showcase his experimentation with light, whether through refraction and reflections, using a simple flashlight to create effects in a dark room, or employing studio lighting for portraiture. His compositions, such as aligning the sun and moon with iconic buildings like the CN Tower, require meticulous planning to achieve perfect alignment. Rob’s sense of humor is also evident in many of his photographs, adding a playful and unique touch to his work.

Upcoming Gallery Show

Powell Gallery Kathy MooreMarch 17 – April 17, 2025. The Timeless Beauty of Utah and Arizona by David Hillock and Portraits of Our Neighbours by Gord McElroy

Open to the public on Mondays: March 17, 24, 31, April 07,14 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm
Saturdays: March 29 and April12 from 11:00am – 2:00 pm.

Over its 137-year history, our Club has been shaped by dedicated Members who have not only sustained it, but also helped it flourish. Our upcoming gallery showcase highlights the work of two exceptional photographers—David Hillock and Gord McElroy—whose landscapes and portraits enrich our community. Their passion for photography, generosity, and countless hours of service make the Toronto Camera Club a truly special place.

David Hillock, a member since 2006, is a devoted volunteer who plays a vital role in the Club’s success. He chairs multiple committees, manages our website, and leads the Club’s volunteer appreciation efforts—an initiative he personally established and continues to support. As the friendly face who welcomes new Members to our weekly meetings, David embodies the spirit of the Club. It’s only fitting that he also serves as our Santa during the holiday portrait sessions, bringing joy to our neighbours each year.
David’s love for photography began around the age of 10 when his mother gave him a Brownie Holiday camera. As a young teenager, he wrote his own column and took photos for a local weekly newspaper. But as life unfolded—with marriage, children, and later, university—photography took a back seat. That changed in 2006 when David retired and joined the Toronto Camera Club, rekindling his passion for the craft, a passion that continues to thrive today.

Gord McElroy became a member of the Club in 2004 and held the position of President from 2008 to 2010. His passion for photographing people began 50 years ago when he started using a 35mm camera and developing photos in a darkroom. Today, he leads the Studio Lighting Workshops, through which numerous Club members, including myself, have experienced the enchantment of studio photography.
Several years ago, the Club began hosting open houses during local special events such as the Fall Festival and Open Doors. During these events, we provided portrait sessions for attendees and emailed the images to them. These sessions have been incredibly popular, with many Club photographers taking part.
The prints displayed in the gallery feature images of neighbors who walked in off the street and posed for photographs. These sessions have been a source of great enjoyment and have resulted in some truly remarkable images capturing the spirit of our community.
If you recognize anyone in the portraits on display and would like a print, please feel free to email . and he will be happy to arrange for you to receive the prints after the gallery show concludes in April.

Woman smoking long pipeOctober 21 - November 11, 2024, Black & White Film Photography - Exposed by Stanley Shoolman

Open to the public (free): Mondays:  October 21, 28, November 04, 11 from 5.30 pm - 7.00 pm.
Thursdays: October 31, November 07, from 5.30 pm - 7.00 pm.
Sundays: October 27, November 03 from  11.00 am - 3.00 pm.

Stanley Shoolman, one of our most dedicated volunteers, is now serving his second term as a Board member and also plays a vital role in welcoming new club members. He joined the club in 2011. Interestingly, he had already been a member in 1980, shortly after immigrating to Canada from South Africa, and won an award for his very first entry to the Salon. Unfortunately for the club, the demands of building a new life in Canada led him to step away from the club for nearly three decades.

Stanley’s passion for photography began at the age of thirteen when he set up his first darkroom. He has always been particularly drawn to documenting people’s lives, especially those from backgrounds vastly different from his own, often marked by hardship. For Stanley, the true fulfillment lies in creating images that resonate emotionally with viewers.

The show contains 72 Images captured on the streets of Cape Town and surrounding: Arniston, a seaside fishing settlement near Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa. Tafalofefe Hospital and surrounding, 100% rural, remote and underdeveloped area of the Xhosa people. Also 21 portraits and images from Amsterdam, Greece, Paris, London and South Africa.

Private Viewings For Small Groups Available by Appointment,

FANTASTICAL is Shiree’s first surreal solo installation which is themed around altered reality compositing. Amalgamating artistic flare, her photographs and expert-level photoshop skills, to create ‘artography,’ as she takes pride in calling it; is her signature style of surrealistic imaging. Not to be missed, Shiree will be showcasing, exclusively, internationally awarded images of a creatively charged whimsical trope.

Known as Photographer At Heart in the art world, Shiree Jetha is a several time international award winning photographer and digital creative, with many gold distinctions from Europe, Asia, The Americas, Australia and New Zealand; acclaiming the titles of Master of Light, FIAP Lifetime Photographer and NFRCC Lifetime Diamond Photographer. Acknowledged for her passion in the photographic arts, short docs and photojournalism, she is true to telling the narrative, in her unique way using her signature style of  technically loaded and well composed images, in either Conceptual Art, Visual Documentary and in moving pictures like cinemographs and time lapsing.

She is based in Toronto, Canada and travels to various worldwide locales, both mainstream and remote, the latter being her preference. Her work remains grounded predominantly on travel and candid street (including environmental portraiture), action-sports, documentary media, architectural and her most favorite, on a complete flipside, the genre of altered-reality compositing, for a bolt of freedom from the mundane! She has exhibited internationally in the US, Canada and Europe, most recently in Belgrade Serbia and Istanbul Turkey, with regular solo installations in Buffalo, New York, Toronto and Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Traveling the world since she was eight years old, and living in six countries, (USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Greece and South Africa), Shiree attributes this odyssey in shaping her special interest in authentic wildlife photography, especially primates, elephant and big cats. Then, inspired by her repertoire of photographs, captured in her studio or on the field, she enjoys re-interpreting them on canvas using organic mixed media of watercolors, acrylics and water-based oils.

She continues to develop her passion for photography, where it began on a more serious note during her time in Oxford, England, when she was a foreign student working on her Bachelor of Science (Honors) degree in Psychology. "Photography was a great escape from the books," she says, allowing her to embrace and nurture her eclectic originative personality.

Shiree is currently a member of the Toronto Camera Club and the Toronto Digital Photo Club. She is an alumnus of Toronto Metropolitan University's Fine Art program in Documentary Media (Photography And Journalism), New York Institute of Photography (Professional Photography and Photojournalism); overlapped by several Adobe certification courses in Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere Pro, After Effects and Illustrator, from Seneca College, Phlearn and Master Class. She is an individual member of and is a CAPA trained judge (2013), most recently completing the O3C judging course, and is an active member of the Professional Photographer's Society of New York State.

March 6 2023 - March 27, 2023: Cinema Paradiso by Lilly Markovic

Lily has been a member of the Toronto Camera Club since 2006 and is the Chair of the Toronto International Salon of Photography - a major exhibition that has been running for 130 years!

Open to the Public on March 11, 18, 25 from 12.30 - 3.30 pm. See the Website Calendar for details.

Lily Marcovic is a passionate artist who feels most inspired when she has a camera in her hands. Trained in landscape architecture, Lily has always been interested in working with the natural environment. Her award winning work encompasses architectural, creative and fine art photography. Lily seeks to capture subtle meanings and unique beauty everywhere - people, places, animals, natural landscapes or just mundane objects.

For this Exhibition she’s chosen to present a compilation of her images taken over the years. The inspiration came during the Covid lock-down when she decided to rearrange thousands of her images sitting in a computer and not being properly categorized. She decided to combine them together by themes, inspirations, colours, structures, shapes, etc.

The result is here, called Cinema Paradiso, a space where you can immerse yourself and forget all the outside problems and worries.

February 6 2023 - February 28, 2023: Looking Up & Looking Down by Jean Liao

Jean Liao has been a member of the Toronto Camera Club since 2019-2020.

Open to the Public on February 11, 18, and 25. See the Website Calendar for details.

Inspired by her father’s black and white images Jean started photography in her teens. She had the disposable Kodak and Fujifilm cameras, and took pictures with Yashica. she always enjoyed reading photo magazines, admiring beautiful images taken by professional photographers. In 2011 she joined the Don Mills Camera Club with the intention to improve her skills. In 2019 she joined the Toronto Camera Club which provides an ample opportunists for learning and improving where Jean is a frequent award winner for her wonderful images.

Since a young age Jean was fascinated by everything that surrounds her. She had a dream of Astro photography and in 2018 joined a small group of people interested in Astro photography. It was a big learning curve in the beginning - to explore constellations, to use star tracker equipment, manually focus on stars in darkness. As she progressed with this new knowledge, she felt the need to upgrade her star tracking equipment from a simple star tracker to a more advanced one, Star Adventure GTI model which can guide the scope or camera to find deep sky objects in the sky. However, the camera itself is still not good enough to capture deep sky objects, so Jean advanced to get a smart telescope which produces excellent deep sky images of nebulae and constellations etc which is good and affordable for an amateur astrophotographer. There is always room for an advancement which will require auto guider, Astro camera, Astro filters, bigger telescope reflector, equatorial mount etc etc.

Learning Astrophotography is a long process and one must be willing to give up sleep and get up when there is a clear night sky and be disappointed when suddenly a patch of clouds rolls in unexpectedly as well as endure freezing cold night for several hours.

Jean’s equipment: Sky-Watcher Star Adventure pro pack star tracker. Sky-Watcher Star Adventure GTI. Nikon D850 500mm lens and Fujifilm X-T20, X-S10 and 14mm, 16mm. Telescope: Unistellar eVscope 2.

January 9, 2023 - January 31, 2023: Once Upon a Time in Toronto by Marton Istvan

Marton has been a Member of the Toronto Camera Club since 2022-2023.

Open to the Public: January 14, 21, and 28. See the Website Calendar for details.

The series Once upon a time in Toronto 2019 consists of 61 photographs and covers one full season cycle in Downtown Toronto, beginning on the first day of Spring 2019, and ending on the last day of Winter 2020 and was photographed using 35mm Kodak black and white film.

Marton have created a visual symphony in C Major using light and shadow, timing and movement, and the classical rules of composition as a showcase of the beauty of the phenomenon of painting with light.

Torontonians are at the edge of civilization to the south and at the edge of the vast wilderness to the north that stretches to the arctic. The series “Once upon a time in Toronto” is Canadiana. The artist incorporated elements into the scenes that are uniquely Toronto and depict the wildness as well as the sophistication of Torontonians.

A photographic identity of a city is determined by the photographer’s eye. Robert Doisneau, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and some of Brassai‘s work set the tone for the photographic identity of Paris where it is depicted as romantic and elegant. The New York style photographers set the identity of New York as a jumbled, noisy mass of people. Marton produced the series of Toronto to set the identity as wild and whimsical, where the animals are an inextricable part of human life, the mannequins have personalities and shop window displays are alive and we humans are in the relentless cycle of the seasons that cover an average range of 60 degree Celsius every full season cycle. Marton is grateful to the good people of Toronto who formed the orchestra in this visual symphony.

Powell Gallery Gulnur Sener TimeFractalwithaParadoxMarch 11 - April 01, 2024. Time Expressions and Abstract Flowers by Gulnur Sener

Open to the Public on Mondays, March 11 from 4:00 to 7:00 and March 18, 25 and April 01, 2024 from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm.

Gulnur Sener joined the TCC Club in 2018 and soon became an active volunteer, assisting with the Powell Gallery and Inspirational Images Nights and curating the club's 3D Galleries, introducing a digital exhibition format in 2020 during the Covid lockdown.

Over the last five years we have enjoyed seeing Gulnur’s exquisite images during our club competitions, filled with beauty, taste and wit. As a fine art photographer, Gulnur’s passion is to create abstract imagery, with digitally enhanced photos and exploring ICM, close-ups, and monochrome photography. Inspiration strikes from discovering geometric elements in architecture and nature, capturing reflections and shadows.

These collections of her images include "Time Expressions" embodied into visuals while “Abstract Flowers” seem to float in a timeless space as if frozen in a moment.  "Time Expressions" delves into moments fading and patterns repeating, fostering awareness of individual paces of time. Viewers are invited to guess the time expression before reading titles, prompting self-reflection on their relationship with time. In the 'Abstract Flowers' series, Gulnur transports us to a timeless realm, freezing moments to reveal nature's delicate beauty in an altered reality. Open to the Public on Mondays, January 22, 29, February 05, 2024 from 5:30pm to 7:00pm

Out of the almost twenty competitions we hold each year in our club, the Assigned Topic stands out with a real thrill. Unlike the many postcards or cliché images commonly seen in our Pictorial competitions, the Assigned Topic provides an opportunity for creativity and innovation, offering a rewarding experience to observe. For this reason, we've decided to showcase Silhouettes in the Powell Gallery, featuring one of the six topics from a previous season.
The exhibit includes 19 images, encompassing both winners and those who scored similarly.

Powell Gallery Sarah SheardNovember 13, 2023 – December 02, 2023: London Fields by Sarah Sheard

Open to the Public on Mondays, November 13, 20, 27 from 5:30pm to 7:00pm and on Saturday, November 18, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Sarah Sheard was given her first camera (Olympus Trip) on her 12th birthday. She ran outside and took slides of rainbow gutters, drain covers, shiny car bumpers, reflections in windows. Lost now, it was the start of observing and searching out the poetry inside the everyday, working with light and projection. She became a writer and her third novel, The Hypnotist, was written from the point of view of a photographer. In 2012, Sarah started making video trailers for her 4th novel. She discovered the joy of shooting and editing videos and working with a still camera again, looking for the poetry and stories in the everyday world with the camera. During the Covid lockdown in 2020, she collaborated with her late partner, actor David Fox, making green screen animated videos and a short documentary on his life.

In September, 2022, Sarah took her Leica DLux7 (converted B&W) to London, England and discovered the joy of photographing its streets and natural beauty. She went back in June-July, 2023 to document more of London's streets and parks, pubs and faces. In reflecting on the differences between writing and working with images, perhaps one is that a writer must withdraw from the world in order to write while a photographer goes out into the world in order to create. Making photographs and videos is the closest thing she has found to be a combination of both.

Powell Gallery Batterfly Max SkwarnaOctober 23, 2023 - November 11, 2023: Nature in Focus by Max Skwarna

Open to the Public on Mondays, October 23,30 and November 6, from 5:30pm to 7:00pm

Max Skwarna rejoined the Toronto Camera Club in 2022/23. Originally from Montreal, Max fostered his love of photography at the age of 18 with his first camera, a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye. After moving to Toronto to work with Gerald Campbell, one of most prestigious portrait photographers in the country, Max began shooting with illustrious photographers Al Gilbert, Tibor Horvath, and nature photographer Dan Gibson. At 23, Max acquired Ashley & Crippen Photography from Gibson and struck out on his own to bring new life to the oldest portrait studio in Canada.

At 40, Max began taking photos while hiking the Bruce Trail in Southern Ontario. Over the past three decades, Max has honed his love for nature photography all over the world, taking thousands of pictures of flora and fauna. For the past four years, Max has focused his nature photography on his favourite spots in Ontario, including the Rouge Valley, the Blackwater Rail Trail, and Carden Alvar Provincial Park—all of which are featured in this show. Retiring from portrait photography in 2022, Max plans to spend his retirement further exploring his passion for nature photography.

Although he loves wild birds, his most treasured captures are of butterflies.

His interests outside of photography include astronomy, painting andsketching, stone carving, mycology and birding.

Grand Manan (NB) Island located on Canada’s east coast, in the Bay of Fundy, is a jewel of an island. Steeped in Maritime history, rich in natural beauty, geology, birds and sea life, Grand Manan Island is a photographer’s paradise. However, most people have never heard of it and cannot locate it on a map. It is as though a secret. Images of the island skilfully captured by Stewart will surely wet viewers appetite to explore Grand Manan island for themselves.
